Symphony of the Soil is an upcoming multi-part documentary film series and web-based project from filmmaker Deborah Koons Garcia, Producer and Director of The Future of Food (2004). The Symphony of the Soil project consists of a two-part feature film series, and a group of short films that examine select soil topics in greater depth.
The first of the film series, Soil and Life, examines soil in all its complexity and mystery. With the help of renowned scientists, we explore soil as a protagonist of our planetary story, including the birth of soil, its life cycle, the many creatures making up the soil community, nutrient cycling, biological processes such as the carbon cycle and the nitrogen cycle, and succession. By gaining an understanding of the elaborate relationships and mutuality between soil, water, the atmosphere, plants, and animals, we come to appreciate the complex and dynamic nature of this precious resource. Part two of the film series, The Anthropogenic Era, examines our human relationship with soil, the use and misuse of soil in agriculture, deforestation and development, and the latest scientific research on soil’s key role in ameliorating the most challenging environmental issues of our time. Techniques which preserve and improve soil are featured.
Filmed on four continents and drawing from ancient knowledge and cutting edge science, Symphony of the Soil is an artistic presentation which will lead us into the possibilities of healthy soil creating healthy plants creating healthy humans living on a healthy earth. Directed by Deborah Koons Garcia.
