Jon Bowermaster

A six-time grantee of the National Geographic Expeditions Council, Bowermaster’s 2007-2008 Antarctic expedition was the final in his OCEANS 8 project, which over the past decade has taken him and his teams around the world by sea kayak, including expeditions to the Aleutian Islands, Vietnam, French Polynesia, Chile/Argentina/Bolivia, Gabon, Croatia and Tasmania. Seeing the world from the seat of a sea kayak has given Bowermaster a one-of-a-kind look at both the health of the world’s ocean and the lives of the nearly 3 billion people who depend on it.

His recent book, OCEANS: The Threats to the Sea and What You Can Do To Turn the Tide, is an anthology of original essays by some of the world’s most intriguing ocean thinkers. The book is companion to the acclaimed Jacques Perrin/DisneyNature film of the same name.

Bowermaster’s latest films continue to garner praise. Terra Antartica: Rediscovering the Seventh Continent; What Would Darwin Think: Man vs. Nature in the Galapagos; SoLa: Louisiana Water Stories; Sea Kayaking Adventures: Exploring the World from Sea Level; and his latest, Dear Governor Cuomo, documenting a concert and rally on the urgent issue of fracking in New York State – are all woven with a common thread – Ocean Awareness.

Author of eleven books and producer of more than a dozen documentary films, when not on the sea Bowermaster lives in the Hudson Valley of New York.
